Being a Calcutta boy, the postmaster felt like a fish out of water in the remote village of Ulapur. He was not good at socializing. Having little company and much time, he would sometimes try his hand at poetry. His salary being small, he would cook his own means and shared them with Ratan, an orphan. He was very sensitive to the needs of the orphan. He would spend time in the evening speaking to Ratan about her past memories. However, on the other side, he felt very homesick whenever he thought about his family. Later, he took to teaching Ratan the alphabets. He was determined to go back to Calcutta though his transfer application was rejected. Hence, he resigned and was going back to Calcutta. But he was worried about Ratan so he had decided to speak to his successor to take care of Ratan. He was also very selfless when he offered Ratan his whole salary so that she could sustain in his absence.
