Explanation:

1. Political causes :

a. The Doctrine of Lapse created a sense of fear among Indian Chiefs.

   No kingdom of Indian rulers was safe under this policy.

b. Disregard and disrespect to the Mughal king, Bahadur Shah Zafar hurt the sentiments of the people.

c. Nana Saheb was furious at not being entitled to Baji Rao II's territory and pension. He instigated revolt everywhere.

d. Awadh was annexed. This angered the soldiers of Awadh in the British Indian army.

2. Religious Causes :

a. People feared mass conversion to Christianity and Western Education.

b. Banning of Sati and female infanticide angered the Hindu priests and locals.

c. Introduction of trains meant breaking the caste rules to the locals as every people of every caste had to sit together.

3. Immediate cause :

Intoduction of Enfield Rifles in the Bengal Army. The rifles had a coating of cow and pig fat grease which had to be bitten off before the catridge was loaded. The eating of cows and pigs  are forbidden to the Hindus and Muslims. So, they revolted.
