Answer:

Ponds and lakes are very similar. Both are small bodies of water, either natural or man-made, that are completely surrounded by land

The rulers and merchants made ponds and lakes as a reservoir of water required for daily consumption and use and also to establish and popularise their power.

EXPLANATION:

Since most Indian rivers are rain fed and remain dry in all the seasons except monsoon, there is always an acute water crisis. Rulers and merchants thus made lakes and ponds for their own use as well as for their subjects. Their personal lakes were really luxurious. They were beautifully paved and often served as modern day swimming pools.

The Gulab Sagar Lake, the Bal Samand Lake are some examples. The Fateh Sagar on the other hand is a pond that was built for public use. These ponds and lakes also served to popularise the kings and merchants who built them.
