After Cortes conquered the Aztecs, the native codices were seen as a threat by the Spanish Catholic priests who wanted the people to accept Spanishrule and forget their own history. Most priests, with the exception of Bartolomé de las Casas, searched for and destroyed all the codices and other texts they could find.
