He suddenly thought that of a precautions which could ensure him safety. He caught hold of the side of the mattress carefully, and very slowly drew it toward himself. It came away, followed by the sheet and the rest of the bedclothes. He dragged all the objects into the very middle of the room, facing the door. There, at some distance from the bedsheet that he could not trust and the cover which had filled him with such anxiety, I made my bed all over again, as well as he could. Then he extinguished all the candles, and, grouping his way to his newly-made bed on the floor, he slipped under bedclothes.
