He got those evil looks from the other mariners because they believed that the speaker's action of killing the albatross was the cause of their misfortune. Out of a streak of madness, the Ancient mariner had killed the albatross which had helped them by making the good south wind blow, splitting the ice bergs etc. They hung the cross around the Ancient mariner's neck as a constant reminder of the sin he had committed.
