Swadeshi Movement involved boycotting British goods and promoting Indian goods. It began with the Partition of Bengal in 1905. It had some major effects in India.
When people started boycotting foreign goods, the demand for Indian goods went up, especially cloth. This came as a boon for Indian textile mills in Bombay and Ahmedabad. In Bengal, coarse cloth was produced which was the tradition there. Although coarse, people wore the cloth in spirit of the Swadeshi.
V. O. Chidambaram Pillai started Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company. It was started in 1906 as a counter measure to British companies. It mainly worked on the Tuticorin-Colombo route.
This was the Beginning of the Swadeshi movement. Its idea gained strength in the years to come. Mahatma Gandhi expanded the idea of Swadeshi to include Indian industrialists. Many reputed industrialists like R. D. Tata came up during this time. So, Swadeshi went far and beyond the events of 1905–06.
