The Persian emperor Darius invaded Greece (and his son Xerxes continued the war) because the Greeks had begun colonizing areas of what is today western Turkey, which was part of the Persian Empire. The population began to consider themselves more Greek than Persian and began to rebel against the local authorities. Greek city-states like Athens supported these rebellions. In the year 497 BCE, Darius vowed revenge and mobilized his army to conquer Greece and prevent them from launching future conflicts. The Greeks united, however, and over decades of fighting pushed back the Persian invasion, remaining independent of the mighty power.
