Why did the the rebels declare Bahadur Shah Zafar, who was very old and powerless, their leader ??? Experts please help

they chose Bahadur Shah Zafar because he was the king of Delhi ( Delhi sultan) ,and the Delhi was the supreme power of India at that time.
