In the book the Three Musketeers, D'Artagnan is offered the position of Lieutenant by the Cardinal after knowing for sure that he was going to be put behind bars. Surprised by the turn of events, he refuses the position saying that he was not the right person and that he didn't deserve the honor and that his friends Athos, Porthos and Aramis were more deserving of the position.  So the Cardinal tells him that he may do as he pleases with the position. Outside, his waiting friends ask if he is okay and he shows them the document encouraging one of them to take the position of Lieutenant. However, all his friends refuse giving different reasons why they can't take the position mainly because none of them felt as deserving and noble as D'artagnan considering the number of times he has risked his life for them or for a noble act.

In the story, "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas, the three friends of D'artagnan, Athos Porthos and Aramis refused to become lieutenant in the Treville company because Athos regards that it will make him below D'artagnan, Porthos is set to marry his wealthy mistress and Aramis is set to join the priesthood.

D'artagnan becomes heartbroken and is also full of regrets but gets the promotion he always wanted.
