Answer:
The uprising of 1857 was the first big challenge to the British rule. It failed due to many reasons.
- The uprising did not spread to all parts of the country. Nor was it supported by all sections of the society. Many Indian rulers refused to help the sepoys. Some were openly hostile to help the British to suppress the uprising.
- The uprising was not organised properly. The revolts in different parts of the country were uncoordinated. The sepoys had no proper ideology or programme to follow.
- The movement suffered from weak leadership. Most of the leaders fought ti liberate their own territories only. No national leader emerged to co-ordinate the momvement, and give it a purpose and direction.
- The sepoys were short of weapons and finances. Whereas the company's Army had access to modern weapons and unlimited funds.
