Gandhiji and his followers wanted to break the salt law which was existing in the British period those days.Indians were forced to buy the expensive imported salt which was not abled by the poor people.So Gandhiji with his followers started to march from his ashram to Sabarmeti.They reached there and took a handful of salt from the ocean, and thus broke the salt law.Hope it helps and pls mark as the best answer. :-)
