The Federalists wanted to replace the Articles of Confederation because they believed that the structure the Articles laid out did not provide enough power for the federal (or national) government to effectively solve problems.

The Articles created a looseconfederation of sovereign states and a weak central government, leaving most of the power with the state governments. The need for a stronger Federal government soon became apparent and eventually led to the Constitutional Convention in 1787
