Thimmakka and Bikkalu Chikkaiah did not have any children. They lived in Hulikal village of Karnataka. So they decided to plant 284 banyan trees on a 3 km stretch of land in Karnataka. It is a National Highway now. They nurtured and looked after them like their own children. Their efforts were recognized by the people and they were given the National Citizens Award by the Prime Minister.
