Thimmakka and her husband, Bikkalu Chikkaiah did not have any children. They belonged to Hulikal a village in Karnataka. To fill in the void in their lives they decided to plant 284 banyan trees along the stretch of 3 km on the National Highway, and nurture them like children. Their work was recognized by the Government of India and they were given the National Citizens' Award by the Prime Minister.
