Why did thr the crofter and the Ironmaster show kindness to the peddler?

Edla had shown kindness to the Peddler even after knowing that he was not a captain. This was the reason why she felt all the more dejected when she came to know that the Peddler was actually a thief who had recently robbed a Crofter. She felt that she had done wrong in offering shelter to a thief.
