These toys were originated during the reign of Tipu Sultan, who is said to have been gifted a wooden toy and he got so impressed with the design that he reportedly invited artisans from Persia to give training to local artisans in the manufacturing of wooden toys. Ivory wood or hale mara is the main wood used for the manufacturing, though sandalwood and rosewood are also occasionally used.
