why did tommy called the book a waste

The answer is
Tommy considered the books as waste because the words stood still and never ran.
He also thought that they are a great waste because they can't be reused again like there mechanical teacher.

Indeed ,it was not waste in those days because there was no better way to propogate knowledge.But from Tommy's point of view .it was really a waste .A lot of trees are cut down to make a paper .

Tommy's book didn't need paper .Millions of books could be recorded on a disc .Now days , we can find , whatever we like ,on the Internet. Even encyclopedias and dictionaries are no longer printed on paper .This has helped to preserve our forest ...
