1) The tonkin free school was started in 1907 to provide a western style education to the vietnamese.
2) This included classes in science,hygiene and french(these classes were held in d evening and had to be paid for separately
3)But learning french and hygiene was not enough,to look modern vietnamese had to also look modern.
4) The school responded by adopting western styles like having a short haircut.
5)This meant a major break for vietnamese with their own identity as they traditionally kept long hair
