The U.S. government viewed its involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam. This was part of the domino theory of a wider containment policy, with the stated aim of stopping the spread of communism.

The Vietnam war was a war between North Vietnam and South Vietnam, in which the North was supported by the Soviet Union, China and their allies and the South by the United States, South Korea, Philippines and their allies.

It was also known as the American War as the communist countries wanted to push back the United States and stop their interference in the East. The war dragged on for 19 years from 1955 to 1975, until the Americans decided to withdraw and communists took power in South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
