Why did Victorian women obey the norms forced on them?

Many women believed and accepted the ideals of womanhood.  It was present in the way they were brought up, the literature they read and the education received at home and school.  Having a small waist meant womanly and they wore corsets to look attractive.  Pain was believed to be suffered by all women and accepted by all.
