During the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress at midnight of December 31, 1929 - January 1, 1930, a pledge was taken that every year on January 26, the "Independence Day" would be celebrated and that the people would unceasingly strive for the establishment of a Sovereign Democratic Republic of India.On 26th Jan 1930 Indian National Congress declared Independence of India and celebrating 26th jan as Independence Day. But officially we got Independence on 15th Aug 1947. With a view to give some importance to this day, our constitution was enforced on 26th January 1950

26 January 1950 was specially chosen as the date of enforcement of the Constitution because it was on this day "Purna Swaraj" day was celebrated in 1930. following the event on December 31, 1929, at Lahore Session of Indian National Congress, when Nehru hoisted the Tricolour and demanded "Purna Swaraj".
