William Jones feel the need to study Indian history, philosophy and law because:-

• He had a great respect for both India and West. According to him, the Indian ancient culture has attained its glory in the past but declined over a period of time.

• The ancient text had the ideas, laws and facts about the past and they could be considered important for the future development in India.

William Jones had a deep respect for ancient cultures, both indian and western. He thought it's important to discover sacred texts in order to understand india. He felt the need to study indian history, philosophy and law as this will not only help the british learn from indian culture but it would also help indian to rediscover their own heritage and understand the lost glories of their past. This would establish the British as guardians of indian culture and gain total control.
