William Jones was a philosopher and loved the Indian culture and literature.

According to him, the deep heritage of India along with the law, arts and philosophy that were highly acclaimed and accepted worldwide, needed to be rediscovered and understood to build a new basis for future India. It was this reason that made him feel to study them.

William Jones felt that the study Indian history, philosophy and law would not only help the British learn from Indian culture, but it would also help Indians rediscover their own heritage, and understand the lost glories of their past. This would also establish the British as guardians of Indian culture and gain total control.
