Answer:

Shylock, the rich Jewish money lender had a religious enimity with Antonio, the Christian merchant.

Both of them believed in their religions with utmost respect. According to Antonio,Jewish people are selfish and cruel and he (Antonio) keeps on cursing the money lender and his religion often.

Shylock could not tolerate it and always hated him for this reason and another reason for Shylock's hatred towards Antonio is that,Antonio did not charge any interest on the amount he lent to the people. Shylock thought of him to be a foolish merchant who doesn't know how to deal.

Once, when Antonio needed money for his dearly friend Bassanio,he asked Shylock for help, for lending a sum of 3000 ducats. There Shylock made a deal agreement which stated that Antonio, the merchant if fails to repay the bond on time,a pound of his flesh (Antonio's flesh) would be cut by Shylock.

Thank you!
