I served my last 4 years in the U.S. Army as a Broadcast Journalist.
Broadcast journalism is important for 2 reasons. It is the most effective way to get information to a large number of people and it involves actual Journalists which know how to properly structure information, vet it for accuracy and deliver it professionally in an unbiased manor.
That said, I feel the historically accepted means of broadcast journalism like large studio television and radio have lost relevance due to social media, amateurs on Youtube and webcasts. Combined with the fact that the large stations are owned by corporations with agendas (or the perception of them) and you have a general lack of trust. People are more inclined to believe unvetted information on social media than they are to believe power houses like CNN these days which is an embarrassment to the industry.
