Imaging modulating the intensity of a certain wavelength in same way as acoustic signal modulates the current. However, it is very inefficient usage of the fiber since the whole idea of going digital over the optical fiber shines only when a much higher information-carrying capacity of the fiber is utilized. The capacity is proportional to the highest frequency that can be transmitted though the transmission medium. So, you've got wire pair, coax, microwave terrestrial link, satellite link and fiber (in order of increasing the highest frequency that can be transmitted though the medium). It's all digital in the fiber (or through the fiber).
