Why dip the thermometer in a liquid before use

A doctor dips the thermometer in a liquid so that ,the mercury drops to 35 degrees and also so that the infections of the previous person who used the thermometer is also removed. The thermometer is kept under the tongue so that the cool air does pass over it and change the measuring.
