A position is a vector because it has both a magnitude and a direction: it is some distance from a zero point (the point we call the origin) in a particular direction. With one-dimensional motion, we can define a straight line along which the object moves.

distance required magnitude not direction because distance is scalar quantity.
in some situation you need to tell only magnitude not direction for example Delhi is 1290km away from my city
but here I can't say in which direction Delhi is.
now
in some situation you need magnitude and direction both for example
my house is 3m north from state bank of India
so for showing small distance you can show both magnitude and direction but for long distance you have to show only distance
