distance When stated with a PARTICULAR direction is displacement
suppose u have to walk from school to home
it can be said like u have to travel 2km(let)
it is distance
and 2km towards south west (let)
it is displacement
u can't say the case 1 is direction related moving from school to home as it will vary from person to person
but particularly like south west can be taken as direction for differentiating between distance and displacement

maallu9524: My teacher told me so
maallu9524: That school to home is direction
Anonymous: no
Anonymous: it will vary from me to u
maallu9524: So what do we refer to as school to home
Anonymous: direction is fixed the cardinals like N S E W etc
Anonymous: it is direction with respect to u
maallu9524: Thank you
Anonymous: not particular

Answer:
For example, you need to reach your school from your home. You can go from any direction you want which leads to your school. That is distance but then you're getting late for school and you need to take the shortest route and there always only one shortest route. That is displacement. Thus, the length of a path travelled by a body in any direction is known as distance and the shortest distance covered by a body in a specific direction is known as displacement.
