The Indian constitution accords with thepresident, the responsibility and authority to defend and protect the Constitution ofIndia and its rule of law. Invariably, any action taken by the executive or legislature entities of the constitution shall become law only after the President's assent.

Yes, the office of the President is constitutionally significant. Your example of APJ Abdul Kalam seems strange, perhaps you have seen only him and his successors (Pratibha Patil and Pranab Mukharjee)?
