Firstly diamond being the hardest substance cannot be ingested by plain licking.. Secondly in the hypothetical scenario if you did manage to ingest it by licking (well if this is the case, many would be interested in the anatomy of your tongue), diamond is made of only carbon that wouldnt cause death but some degree of indigestion.
Now, if I were to talk about a reason why licking would cause death, then pay attention to the meaning of licking in slang which means "to steal". If you go by that definition, you stand a good chance of getting yourself killed trying to lick(steal) a lady's diamonds
hope this help you

Answer:
This is a myth.
I'll tell you the story behind it, which I got to know this from my family, so won't be able to find a source to prove my point.
In ancient India, when the kings went to fought battles, their wives used to wait for them to win the battle and come back. But, whenever they lose a battle and with that of course their lives, the wives used to indulge in the practice of Jauhar (self-immolation to avoid capture.
One of their methods include to coat their diamonds on rings with poison so if any unfortunate event occurs, they can immediately lick their posioned diamonds and die on the spot
