Acids do not show acidic behaviour in the absence of water because the dissociation of hydrogen ions from an acid occurs in the presence of water only. It is the hydrogen ions that are responsible for the acidic behaviour.

The acidic behaviour of acids is due to the presence of hydrogen ions ( H+ ions ) in them .

The acid produces hydrogen ions only in the presence of water .

So in the absence of water , an acid will

not form hydrogen ions and hence will

not show acidic behaviour .
