Why do acids not show acidic behaviour in the absence of water??

according to the Arrhenius theory, the acids are hydrolyzed to produce only hydrogen ion as cation. on absence of water acids could not get hydrolyzed to produce hydrogen cation/hydroxonium ion, which is the cause of acidity .
