This is because of the acidic properties that Blue Lithmus paper turns red because of acids.

There are some pigments present in Blue Lithmus which react with H⁺⁺ IONS.

Also when Blue Lithmus paper is dipped in base or a neutral solution then it remains blue and has no effect.

Additional Information:

Red Lithmus papers turns red when dipped in a basic solution. Whereas it stays red when dipped in acid or a neutral solution.

It also is reacts with H⁺⁺ IONS .
