Alkanes have less amount of carbon content in them..with sufficient oxygen all will burn cleanly. Alkanes general formula is CnH(2n+2). The higher the amount of carbon in a hydrocarbon,the more oxygen and more heat is required to convert all of the carbon to CO2. Alkenes (CnH2n), having a double bond (C=C) in their makeup contain less Hydrogen and therefore will need a little extra oxygen in order to give complete combustion of carbon.
