Why do all food chains start with a plant?

Explanation:

Plants are autotrophs and they prepare their own food. They are the primary organisms who produce energy in the ecosystem, by the process of photosynthesis. Animals are heterotrophs and they are not designed to produce food on their own for their energy requirements, and because of this reason, they depend on plants. Intake of plants for food is done by the herbivores in order to provide energy to their body. Here, there is a transfer of energy from that of plants to the animals (i.e. from region of higher concentration  to lower concentration). Carnivores then depend on these herbivores for their higher energy requirements and thus, life sustains in such ecosystems...
