All the metal get polished before the experiment in order to make them available for further oxidation reaction.

EXPLANATION:

This is done by removing the topmost layers of the metal so that on burning the metal the metal oxide will prevent metal piece from further oxidation.  Polishing refers to process that involves the smoothing a work piece surface using abrasive. Grey and white aluminium oxide, carbon steel and alloy steel are used as an abrasive.
