(You posted it in Physics section so im providing a physics based Answer)
Its difficult to travel in mud due to the high viscocity of mud, so in order to move faster they walk on it rater than in it. But in order to not sink into the mud, they must not apply too much pressure. P is inversely propotional to the area on which their force(weight) is acting. Lager feet is lager area, meaning less pressure, so they wont sink.
