Why do army tanks have tracks?

Army tanks are very heavy. Also, they have to move on uneven ground, mud and snow. If the army tanks were provided with wheels and tyres, they would have sunk into the ground due to their weight. We know that when we increase the area, pressure reduces. Steel belts enable the tanks to spread their weight over a larger surface area and thus exert a lower force per unit area on the ground. These belts are called caterpillar tracks.

Earlier tracked vehicles weren't practical in battle because their steam engines were too cumbersome and unreliable. The internal combustion engine made tracked military vehiclesfeasible. Tracked vehicles can move easily over rough terrain because thetrack makes contact with a wide area of the ground.
