Space is vacuum that is it does not contain any gases. it has no atmosphere and there is no air in it. As human beings we need oxygen to breathe. even a very small lack of oxygen may cause death of the individual. Hence astronauts have to take oxygen with them in space to breathe in the absence of air and thus oxygen.

As we all know, oxygen is very much essential to sustain life. Every living organism needs oxygen to respire. If we lack oxygen even for some minutes, we can die. And, in space there is not oxygen and no air. If astronauts go into space without oxygen, they might even die. So, they need to carry oxygen to space.
