Why do banks or leanders demand collateral against loans ?

Collateral is asset that borrower owns. It acts as a guarantee for the lender and banks that the borrower will return the loan. The banks take the collateral and when the loan is fully repaid, it is given back to the borrower. If the borrower fails to repay the loan then the collateral is sold out to recover the loan.
