The single under soil root system is not enough to provide support to the big and heavy standing banyan tree.The aerial roots are found coming out from one of the branches that provides complete support.
Also banyan tree has prop roots which comes from various aerial parts of the tree which when touches the soil , then it become thick and stronger to support the heavy stems of the banyan tree
