Well, there are plenty of reasons, all answered by ecology, evolutionary biology and sociobiology. Here are three-

a.) SHELTER: Trees have a protective canopy that shields the birds from a lot of weather conditions like rain, sun and snow.

b.) ESCAPING PREDATORS: Most predators of birds and their eggs are terrestrial, ground-bound animals like snake, wolf etc. If their homes are at a height, these predators cannot reach their homes and hence they are safe.

c.) REGULATING TEMPERATURE: Nests are inherently well-ventilated due to the knitting and help regulate the temperature in the nest. This also helps egg hatching.
