the body floats on water due to 2 things : weight and air quantity
in weight case:
when you throw the coin in water it settles down but when you thriw a leaf in water it floats because coin is heavier then leaf.
in air quantity case:
when we throw the air filled baloon in water it floats over it but when we throw baloon with no air it sinks. because air is lighter than water

body floats when its density is lower than the density of the liquid and sink when it's density is higher than that of the liquid.
it also depend on the surface are which is in contact with the liquid....when the surface area is large, then the upward force given by the the liquid may exceed the force given by the body....hence resulting in the floatation of the body
