Imagine you are standing with leg stick together and leg apart, if you got pushed you will likely to fall if your leg stick together. So it give you stability for lateral load.
Mainly wider base means for bearing pressure to the ground. Wider base means less pressure. Like if you push your skin with your finger compare to pushing your skin with a needle, it will likely to go direct into your skin
