The main cause is Buddha. Because Buddha believed that all people are equal. And that every individual no matter which caste he belongs to, has the chance to achieve nirvana. The caste system sustains that only the Brahmana can achieve spiritual awareness. Because only they are able to access spiritual knowledge.
In conclusion, Buddhism is all about equality. And dividing the population into classes does not fit their beliefs. Telling a person that he can or cannot achieve spiritual enlightenment due to the class that he was born into is not right, according to the Buddhist Teachings.
