The principle behind this is to spread out the load leading to a more stable building. When the base of a building is made broader, the center of gravity is lowered (as you understand that tall objects have higher centers of gravity making them less stable)-lowering the center of gravity makes the building more stable.
On the other hand, due to the fact that pressure is directly proportional to the amount of force applied per unit area, having a smaller base would lead to an increase on the amount pressure exerted on the earth below the building leading an unstable structure.
