It’s in proportion to their size. Because of their weight and size, elephants need to distribute the weight better. That way the pressure on the ground is even and their feet don’t sink.

Imagine if they had small feet like the size of dogs’ paws or like horses hooves. The weight on each foot would be immense. Such a concentrated amount of weight on a small surface area will cause the feet to put a much larger amount of pressure on the ground, and their feet will sink into the soil. Besides them getting a whole load of other anatomical issues with their bones and stuff.

It’s like poking something with a sharp needle and a blunt one. A sharp needle will pierce because the surface area is very small and the pressure is huge. A blunt one will pierce with more effort, because the tip has a greater surface area on contact as compared to the sharp one. So the pressure is distributed and not at a single point.

Sort of the same concept as camels having broader hooves but there are differences.

Fun fact: Elephants walk on their toes
