Cartilage is made up of specialized cells called chondrocytes. These chondrocytes produce large amounts of extracellular matrixcomposed of collagen fibres, proteoglycan, and elastin fibers. There are no blood vessels in cartilage to supply the chondrocytes with nutrients.

Cartilages have slightly pliable matrix due to the less amount of blood supply that it possesses

Explanation:

  • the cartilage is made up of special cells which are known as the chondrocytes. the cartilage consists mainly of the collagen fibres and other minerals. However the amount of ground material is different for different types of cartilage.
  • The ground substance is known as the matrix.
  • since there is no separate blood supply for every cartilage hence the amount of pliable matter matrix is very less in most of the cartilages.
  • in addition to this If the amount of matrix was higher than the tensile strength which is is supported by the cartilage would have been much lesser.
